May is BETTER HEARING AND SPEECH MONTH

This post is brought to you by our Speech-Language Pathologist, Tonya Hanson.

May is
BETTER HEARING AND SPEECH MONTH
“Communication For All”
Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM), celebrated every year in May, provides an opportunity
to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA
(American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) members in providing life-altering treatment that
can improve the quality of life for those who experience problems with speaking, understanding, or
hearing.

Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists are ASHA members.  Speech-Language
Pathologists (SLPs) are healthcare professionals trained to work in a variety of settings based on
their skills, lifestyle, and preferred interests. These work settings may include hospitals,
rehabilitation centers, senior-living facilities, public schools, private schools, universities and private
practice establishments. SLPs work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language,
social communication, cognitive-communication, voice and swallowing disorders in
children and adults.

In keeping with this year’s theme “Communication for All” I am sharing with you tips for enhancing
speech and language development for students as well as tips on voice and prevention of vocal
overuse for teachers. Look out for them in your mailboxes!

I appreciate all the teachers and staff at GPE and all that you do for our students!
